Peter Conser was a prominent citizen in Eastern
Oklahoma in the late 19th century. To house his large family that
included nine children, Peter built a two-story home with eight
rooms.
Peter had many public duties including captain
of the Lighthorse. He also served as a representative and then
a senator to the Choctaw Council. In addition, Peter ran a large
farm, a blacksmith shop, grist mill, and saw mill. He also kept
a general store with a post office.
Peter Conser died in 1934 but his home remained in the Conser
family. In 1967 Mrs. Lewis Barnes, a granddaughter of Peter Conser,
and her husband, donated the house to the Oklahoma Historical Society.
The Society has renovated the house, returning it to its appearance
in the Indian Territory period.
The interior of the home has been
furnished with items reflective of the Conser family’s wealth,
social position, and the period. Click
