BIG CEDAR VISTA - OVERLOOK

This view is through the shortleaf pines of Spring Mountain towards U.S. Highway 259, which was dedicated October 29, 1961, by President John F. Kennedy at Big Cedar. A monument located at the intersection of Highway 259 and Highway 63 commemorates the event.
From Big Cedar, Highway 259 ascends gradually to the top of Kiamichi Mountain where the "Three Sticks" monument stands in recognition of conservation efforts.

The area to the west of this point, on the Winding Stair and Kiamichi Mountains, is the scene of the climactic events of the novel, TRUE GRIT, a best seller by Charles Portia, an Arkansas native.
